During the last few weeks at my placement I’ve been thinking about what the teachers roll in creating a community is. I’ve been wondering this questions because one of my classes is a grade nine class and some of the students seem to know each other and others are starting to become friends. I’ve been wondering if it’s solely the teacher’s responsibility to foster relationships? And how does one even get started in forming this community? I think getting started with forming a classroom community depends a lot on the class, the environment and the teacher’s personal style. I understand that the primary responsibility of the teacher is to make it safe for people to share and for us to affirm how pleased we are that they are part of our learning community. I think a way that I might begin to form my classroom community is for the first week or so of school asking the students how they are and what they did the night before. Another idea I like that my mentor teacher does is have the students fill out Q-cards with their answers to his questions on it and then each day he picks one, reads it to the class and they have to guess who the student is. I think that this is a simple way for the students to get to know each other.
